Dewey’s Bakery is expanding its wholesale business with a new line of cookies.

The new line of cookies, including six flavors, will be available next week in all Fresh Market supermarkets and Dewey’s Bakery stores, and they will join a line of savory crackers that Dewey’s introduced in June.

“This has been a long time coming,” said Scott Livengood, the CEO and owner of Dewey’s. “I’ve been wanting to do this ever since I bought the company 11 years ago,” said Livengood, who previously was the chief executive of Krispy Kreme.

Dewey’s, which has been in business since 1930, moved into a 100,000-square-foot building on Kimwell Drive in 2014 that gives the company plenty of room to expand production. It also is still using its 50,000-square foot plant on Commercial Plaza Street off Jonestown Road.

The company has two retail stores, at 262 South Stratford Road in Thruway Shopping Center and 2876 Reynolda Road.

In 2012, Dewey’s bought Blue Ridge Ice Cream and began selling ice cream in the bakeries. In addition, the company has been in the e-commerce business and private-label wholesale business for years.

It still does a lot of private-label cookies, and it still sells cookies online under the Salem Baking Co. label.

But the introduction of the new cookies and crackers mark the first time that Dewey’s has ventured into the wholesale business using the Dewey’s Bakery label.

The cookies and crackers are “Southern-inspired flavors,” Livengood said.

The six cookie flavors are: Banana Pudding, Lemon Bar, Brown Butter, Pecan Praline, Caramel Popcorn and Triple Chocolate Brownie.

Dewey’s looked to some of its own baked goods, such as its pecan pie and lemon bars, in choosing the flavors.

The cookies are free of artificial ingredients and preservatives. The cookies are made with real butter. A 6-ounce bag sells for $4.99.

The cracker flavors are Carolina Style Barbecue, Low Country Boil, Sharp Aged Cheddar, Sweet Potato and Chipotle Cheddar Cornbread. A 5-ounce (soon to be 6-ounce) bag sells for $4.99.

Three of the cookies — Lemon Bar, Banana Pudding and Triple Chocolate Brownie — are soft-baked. Many feature chunks of flavor-packed ingredients, such as bits of candied lemon or caramel popcorn.

“We really tried to look at flavors that other people weren’t doing,” said Livengood, who wants to take the Dewey’s Bakery brand nationwide to other supermarkets and food stores.

He expects to introduce additional flavors of this new line of cookies as early as January.
